SJU CRUSHES MORGAN STATE, 99-51, EN ROUTE TO HAWK CLASSIC TITLE GAME

PHILADELPHIA (12/28/01) - Led by its three foreign imports, the Saint Joseph's University women's basketball team exploded for its highest scoring output in more than a decade, routing Morgan State, 99-51, in the semifinals of the Hawk Classic at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The victory advanced the Hawks (8-2) to the tournament's title game for the twelfth straight year, where they will face Georgetown, a 70-57 winner over Kansas. MSU fell to 0-10 with the loss. Senior Susan Moran, a native of Tullamore, Ireland, did the bulk of the damage for the Crimson and Gray, but was also joined in double-figures by sophomores Amra Mehmedic (Bosnia-Heregovina) and Irina Krasnoshiok (Moldova). Fellow sophomore Stephanie Graff, who resides in nearby Drexel, Hill, Pa., also finished with double digit points. Moran had her way in the first half, as the Hawks shook off a sluggish start to lead at intermission, 47-21. Moran, who matched the Bears first half scoring effort, contributed 21 of her game-high 29 points prior to the break. MSU hung tough early on and trailed by just a single point with 11:09 remaining in the first stanza, 15-14. Following a media timeout, however, SJU erupted and never looked back, blitzing Morgan State with a crushing 23-0 run over the next 6:42 and seizing command of the game. In the second half with SJU comfortably in control, it was time for the Hawk sophomores to shine. The threesome of Graff, Krasnoshiok and Mehmedic combined to score 33 of SJU's 52 second half points. Mehmedic finished with 20 points to match her career-high. Krashnoshiok and Graff meanwhile contributed 14 points apiece for the game. The Hawks led by as many as 53 in the second half before settling for the final margin of victory, 99-51. Morgan State finished with three players in double figures. Sherie Cornish led the way with 13 points, while Erinn Coleman added 12 and Chanelle Scott chipped in 10. The 99 points by Saint Joseph's were the most since the team scored 107 against Saint Bonaventure at the Fieldhouse on January 4, 1990. A rowdy crowd of 1,281 tried to will SJU to the century mark, but Morgan tightened up on the defensive end and slowed up the game offensively to keep the Hawks under 100. The win lifts the Hawks into the championship game of the Hawk Classic. SJU will face Georgetown in the title game at 4:00 p.m. Kansas and Morgan State will compete in the consolation game at 2:00. The Crimson and Gray will be aiming for their third straight Classic crown and fifth overall.
