PHILADELPHIA (3/16/02) -The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team dropped its fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon, losing its MAAC opener toMount Saint Mary's, 15-4. Junior Matt Durkin led the way for SJU scoring two goals while junior Josh Warfield tallied five goals for the Mountaineers. Mount Saint Mary's dominated the field but remained scoreless as the Hawks' man-to-man defense contained the Mountaineers. At the seven minute mark, MSM's Billy Jautze connected off a pass from Mark Cox to open the game at 1-0. Two minutes later Cox scored an unassisted goal while Warfield found the back of the net with 11 seconds remaining in the quarter to push the lead to 3-0. Junior Chris Spay jumped out at the beginning of the second quarter scoring an unassisted goal and putting the Hawks on the board. It was the last time the Hawks would score that half as the Mountaineers pounded four consecutive goals to the back of the SJU net. Mount Saint Mary's led at the half, 7-1. The third quarter was much of the same as MSM scored the first goal of the half in the early minutes to push to an 8-1 lead. Junior Alex Heidenberger found an opening among the blue jerseys to soar a shot into the back of the Mountaineer net. Mount Saint Mary's responded with three unanswered goals to make it 11-2. Durkin scored the first of two goals with two minutes remaining in the quarter. The third stanza finished with The Mount leading, 11-3. In the final period, Mount Saint Mary's outscored Saint Joseph's, 4-1. Durkin scored his second goal of the afternoon when the Mountaineers were in a zone defense. Durkin broke open sending the ball between the pipes to give the Hawks' their fourth and final goal. Senior goalie Nick Leopard protected the net for the Hawks, turning away 17 shots. Saint Joseph's, 0-5, will next play on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. when they face Rutgers. The game will be held on Finnesey Field.
