FINEGAN EARNS 100TH CAREER WIN, AS HAWKS TOP LA SALLE, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA (10/19/03) - Freshman Julie Lentz came on as a substitute and scored twice and classmate Nicole Antonini added her ninth tally of the season to help Saint Joseph's (6-9, 2-2 A-10) to a 3-2 victory over La Salle (7-9, 0-3 A-10) in Atlantic 10 field hockey on Finnesey Field. The victory evened the Hawks' record in conference play and gave head coach Michelle Finegan her 100th career victory. SJU fell behind 1-0 in the 26th minute as La Salle's Tracy Guenther opened the scoring. St. Joe's then tied the contest in the waning seconds of the first half as Lentz knocked home a pass from freshman Maryann Reis with 1.1 seconds remaining before halftime. Carrying its momentum into the second frame, the Crimson and Gray took the lead for good, just 2:29 into the period. Senior Katelyn O'Brien knocked the rebound of a shot by freshman Lauren Luft to the far post where Antonini slammed it into the cage for a 2-1 Hawk lead. The SJU tally made for a frantic final period as both teams put significant pressure on the others net. Each team attempted 17 shots with Hawk netminder junior Courtney Huff registering 10 shots and her counterpart Colleen Bolger making nine stops. Lentz gave SJU insurance late as she scored her second goal of the game off a pass from O'Brien with under four minutes to play to make the score 3-2. The Explorers made things interesting when sophomore Emily SImone tallied with 1:22 to play, but LSU could not net the game-tying goal. SJU honored its lone senior, Amie Schmoltze, in pregame festivities. SJU is now idle until Sunday, October 26 when the team travels south to face nationally-ranked A-10 leader Richmond.
