HAWK WOMEN HANDLE SPIDERS IN RICHMOND, 63-50

RICHMOND (2/02/03) - Senior Colleen McGahan came off the bench and scored a season-high 12 points to spark the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (13-7, 8-1 A-10) to a 63-50 win over Richmond (14-6, 5-4 A-10) at the Robins Center. The Hawks took control of the game midway through the first half and kept the Spiders at a comfortable distance the rest of the way. McGahan was joined in double figures by juniors Irina Krasnoshiok (13 points) and Stephanie Graff (10). The lead changed hands eight times during the early going and the score was knotted on seven occasions, the last time at 22-22 with 6:53 to go. Both teams shot well and the game established an entertaining flow from the outset. McGahan and fellow senior Takeya Trayer, who was called on to spell junior Erin Brady due to foul trouble, keyed a 13-2 run over the next 4:43. The spurt put SJU up by 11, 35-24. Trayer scored five points, while McGahan canned bookend threes that opened and closed the run. SJU led at intermission, 35-26. St. Joe's was never threatened in the second half, keeping the Spiders in a double-digit deficit the entire period. The Hawks in fact led by as many as 18 after the break, 55-37. Balanced scoring was the key for SJU, as eight of the nine Hawks that played got on the scoring ledger. Krasnoshiok recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. McGahan added 12, connecting on 4-7 from beyond the arc. Graff added 10 and five boards. Richmond senior Ebony Tanner, the only Spider in double figures, had game-highs of 20 points and 12 caroms. SJU continues its three game road swing this week, traveling to St. Bonaventure on Thursday for a noon-time tilt and the traveling to Pittsburgh on Sunday to close out the western portion of the A-10 slate at Duquesne.
