SJU TOPS WAGNER, 10-7, IN MAAC MEN'S LACROSSE ACTION

STATEN ISLAND, NY (3/27/04) - Saint Joseph's won its third straight MAAC game with Saturday's 10-7 win at Wagner. Senior Mike Pagliaro led the Hawks with a three-goal performance. Sophomores Andrew Four and Brian Ponne each added two as St. Joe's improves to 4-5 overall, 3-1 in the MAAC.

St. Joe's scored first when senior Brian Mullan took a feed from junior Kevin McGrann just 3:40 into the contest but Wagner would score the next three goals over the course of the next three minutes to jump out to a 3-1 advantage. Wagner (1-4, 1-1 MAAC) sophomore Kevin Zulauf scored an unassisted goal before senior Sean Hennessey and freshman Taylor Poschmann each scored to give the Seahawks a two-goal lead. Jared Jax and Kevin McKenny assisted the Zulauf and Poschmann tallies, respectively.

The teams would swap the next four goals as Wagner held a 5-3 heading to the halftime locker rooms. SJU senior Mike Pagliaro and McGrann each tallied for the Hawks while Seahawk freshman Mike Sciamanna tallied two assisted goals after taking passes from Josh Hamilton and Tom Marchetti , respectively in the four-goal stretch.

The third quarter was the difference as St. Joe's dictated the tempo and outshot Wagner 21-5 in the third period as the Hawks scored three unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead. Sophomore Andrew Four took a pass from Brian Mullan just thirty seconds into the second half before Matt Mueller scored two-and-a-half minutes later. SJU sophomore Brian Ponne notched an unassisted goal with just 1:04 left in the third period.

SJU scored six seconds into the fourth quarter when Ponne scored off a sophomore Brian Borden pass to give the Hawks a 7-5 lead. Wagner answered two minutes later when Mike Sciamanna scored after another Tom Marchetti's second assist of the game to close the deficit to 7-6 but that would be as close the Green & White would get.

After Wagner closed to within, 7-6, SJU tallied three goals in a minute as Pagliaro and Ponne scored even- strength goals before Four scored his second goal of the game to make the score 10-6 and put out the game out of reach.

Wagner's Kevin Zulauf scored with nine seconds in regulation to make the final score, 10-7.

Wagner received three goals from freshman Mike Sciamanna and two goals from sophomore Kevin Zulauf. Senior Sean Hennessey and freshman Taylor Poschmann chipped in with a goal each for the Seahawks. Tom Marchetti handed out two assists while freshman Josh Hamilton, sophomore Jared Jax and freshman Kevin McKenny and Sciamanna all recorded assists for the Green & White.

Wagner sophomore goalkeeper Chris Sochacki made 22 saves on the afternoon, just two saves short of his career-high.

SJU was led by Pagliaro's three goals. Four and Ponne added two goals apiece while Mullan, McGrann and Mueller tallied goals. Hawk sophomore goalie Travis McDonnell made 12 saves in the game.
