SJU BLASTS WAGNER, 14-2, IN SECOND MAAC WIN

PHILADELPHIA, PA (4/10/02) - Senior Kevin Callaghan tallied five goals to lead Saint Joseph's to a 14-2 win over Wagner on Finnesey Field. The win was the Hawks' second of the season. Both victories are in conference play. SJU scored the first goal of the game as Matt Durkin found the back of the net 4:40 into the opening period. Callaghan and Alex Heidenberger both netted goals within minutes to push the Hawk lead 3-0. The Seahawks tallied their first goal with 13 seconds remaining in the quarter. Wagner jumped out in the second stanza, finding the back of the net and cutting the Hawks lead by two. It would be the last time the Seahawks would score in the game as SJU dominated the field for the rest of the half. Heidenberger and Callaghan both tallied a pair of goals while Durkin chipped in one en route to a 5-0 goal spree. The Crimson and Gray ended the half with a 8-2 lead, their largest of the season. The start of the second half began much like the first half ended. Saint Joseph's dominated both sides of the field as the defense was able to cause turnovers and the offense blasted goal after goal into the Seahawk net. SJU scored three goals in the third quarter and matched it in the fourth while holding the Green and White offense scoreless. The game ended in a 14-2 victory for the Hawks. Besides Heidenberger, Callaghan and Durkin, Kevin McGrann added one goal and one assist, Mark Lipscomb notched one goal and Ed Walsh chipped in one goal and one assist. Mike Pagliaro also accounted for two assists. Jim Fagan and Jason Hassler each scored one goals for Wagner. Senior Nick Leopard recorded 9 saves for SJU. The Hawks, now 2-7, 2-1 in MAAC conference play, take on Providence at home on Saturday April 13 (1:00).
