PHILADELPHIA (1/12/03) - Junior Irina Krasnoshiok scored a career-high 32 points, 20 in the second half, to power the Saint Joseph's University women's basketball team (7-6, 3-0 A-10) to a 73-53 win over Rhode Island (8-6, 0-3 A-10) at the Fieldhouse. The win was the 13th straight by SJU over URI. Juniors Erin Brady (13 points, 7 assists) and Amra Mehmedic (10 assists) also made key contributions for the Crimson and Gray.
The Hawks led by just four at intermission, 29-25, but Krasnoshiok scored 20 points in the second half to help the Hawks pull away for the win.
SJU scored the first 10 points of the second half to push the lead out to double-digits, 39-25, and never looked back. A three-point basket by junior Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan served as the key bucket during the run.
The Hawk advantage would dip under 10 points just once the rest of the way with the margin hovering between 10 and 14 points most of the period. The Rams finally ran out of steam at the finish with SJU scoring 13 of the game's final 16 points to make the final 20 point difference, 73-53, the game's largest.
Krasnoshiok, who shot 12-17 from the field, became the first Hawk player other than Susan Moran to score 30 points in a game since Melissa Coursey accomplished the feat, also against Rhode Island, in 1998. Krasnoshiok also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Brady added 13 points and seven assists. Mehmedic scored just six points, but handed out a career-high 10 assists and had four steals. Senior Colleen McGahan and junior Stephanie Graff added seven points apiece.
The game remained close throughout the first half. SJU led be as many as five on several occasions during the opening half, but the Rams fought back and briefly took a three point lead with 8:50 remaining. A couple of lay-ups by Brady and a three-pointer by McGahan gave SJU a lead it would never relinquish.
Rhodey was paced by 19 points from Amanda Mills and 14 points from Denise King.
With the win SJU improved to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, tying them with George Washington for the League's best mark.
The Hawks will have little time to rest with the team hosting Pennsylvania on Tuesday and Dayton on Friday, before travelling across town to meet La Salle next Sunday.
