PHILADELPHIA (8/29/00) - The St. Joseph's
University women's field hockey team fell to
Villanova, 4-0, in the season opener for both
schools. Played on the Finnesey Field turf, the
Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on first
half goals by Nicole DiMaggio and then coasted
to the victory.
The fledgling Hawks, who started just two
seniors, were outplayed on both sides of the
field by a more experienced Villanova squad.
"We made some simple, basic mistakes," assessed SJU head coach
Joan Broderick. "We're very young, very disconnected, but give
Villanova credit they worked the ball well and got some good scoring
opportunities...It's a young team and it's going to be a learning
process."
Junior
Lauren Bradley (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) turned aside
eight Wildcat shots before being relieved by freshman
Courtney Huff
(Oreland, Pa./Springfield Twp.) late in the contest. Also turning in a
solid game for the Hawks was senior
Amy Scheuren (Honey Brook,
Pa./Twin Valley), who missed the entire 1999 campaign with
mononeucleosis.
The Hawks return to action this weekend with a pair of games in
Boston. On Friday, the team will meet perennial power Boston College,
while on Sunday the Cityliners will square-off against Maine in a game
played at B.C.
