VILLANOVA WOMEN HANDLE HAWKS IN HOME OPENER, 59-44

PHILADELPHIA (11/22/02) - Stifled from the floor the Saint Joseph's University women's basketball team mustered just 34.0% shooting from the field and allowed Villanova to notch a 59-44 season-opening Big 5 win at the Fieldhouse. Junior Stephanie Graff had 22 points and seven rebounds for the Crimson and Gray. The victory was the first by the Wildcats on Hawk Hill since 1981. VU hit a three from the wing to open the game and did not trail the rest of the way. A 12-2 run by Villanova turned a four point advantage (10-6) into a 22-8 lead with 7:52 left in the first half. VU took a 14 point lead into the break, 30-16. A 10-5 spurt by SJU early in the second stanza trimmed the Villanova lead to nine, 35-26 at the 16:09 mark. Graff was the catalyst of the Hawk run, netting seven points during the surge. VU countered the Hawks with a 14-1 run of its own over the next eight minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 22 points, 49-27. Villanova was led by 22 points from senior Katie Davis and 18 points from fellow junior Trish Juhline. Villanova shot 42.9% (9-21) from beyond the arc, while the Hawks were held without a three-pointer for the first time since a loss to Temple on February 19, 2001. The Hawk will have little time rest, as SJU returns to the court on Sunday at Virginia. Tip-off is 2:00 PM.
