PHILADELPHIA (4/8/01) - The St. Joseph's men's lacrosse
team seemed to have finally righted itself. After starting off
the season with six straight losses, the Hawks had posted
back-to-back wins and headed to Providence with
momentum. But after playing solid through three quarters,
momentum shifted to the Friars, winners of three straight
heading into the contest, and PC scored the final three
goals of the came to pull out a stunning 8-7 comeback win.
Junior Bert Whitelock led SJU with two goals and two
assists. Fellow junior
Ed Walsh added two goals for the
Hawks while Kevin Callahan,
Tony Broderick and Rob
McCracken each tallied once. Randy McNeill added two
assists for SJU.
Sophomore Skip Dunphy led the Friars, who remain
unbeaten at home (5-0 )with six points on two goals and
four assists. Kyle Ojakian tallied two goals and added two
assists, followed by Jim Dooley with two goals and one assist, and Chris Houston with two
goals.
After a 1-1 first quarter, the Hawks tallied twice in the second to take a 3-1 lead into the
lockerroom at intermission on goals by Broderick and Callaghan in the second. Both
teams managed to score four goals in the third quarter, with SJU holding a 7-5 lead at the
end of the quarter.
In the fourth and final quarter, the Friars scored three unanswered goals to pull out the
win. . Dunphy led off the quarter with a goal assisted by Dooley with 8:59 remaining in the
game, to cut the deficit to one (7-6). Houston then notched his second goal of the game
58 seconds later, on an assist from Dunphy. Providence won the game with 5:13
remaining in the fourth, when Dooley connected on a pass from Ojakian.
John Farley made 15 saves in goal for the Friars (5-5, 3-2 in MAAC play) while Nick
Leopard made four saves in goal for the Hawks, who fall to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in the
MAAC.
SJU will play its final regular season home game this Wednesday night when they host
Manhattan at 8:00 PM.
