EMMITSBURG, MD (4/29/01) - Mount St. Mary's used a
seven-goal fourth quarter to defeat St. Joseph's, 14-10,
and eliminate the defending league champions from the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse playoffs.
It was the final regular season game for both teams
After a 3-3 first quarter, sophomore
Chris Spay (3 goals)
helped propel SJU to 4-0 second quarter to give the Hawks
7-3 halftime lead.
From the start of the second half, Mount St. Mary's
answered with four straight goals to knot the score at 7-7
with six minutes to play. In the closing seconds of the
quarter, however, the Hawks retook the lead at 8-7, with a strong Randy McNeill shot from
15 yards out.
The fourth quarter was all Mountaineers, as Matt Downs, Nick DeFelice, Josh Warfield and
Robbie Gillis helped their team establish its own four-goal run and an 11-8 lead over the
Hawks. That lead would remain, as the Hawks could only manage to get within two goals
at 12-10, before final goals by Warfield and Rossetti put St. Joseph's away and knocked
them out of the MAAC Tournament.
Warfield led the Mount with four goals on the day, while DeFelice and Rossetti each had a
pair of goals and an assist. Downs led the Mountaineers in assists, with three in the game.
The Hawks were led by Spay, who had three goals in his team's losing effort. McNeill
added two goals and an assist in his final game as a Hawk.
SJU ends the season, 5-9 overall, 5-4 in MAAC play.
