Susan Moran erupted for 34 points, two shy of her career-high, and grabbed 12 boards to lead the Saint Joseph's University women's baskeetball team past Boston University, 59-47, at Case Gymnasium. With the win the Hawks extended their winning streak to a season-best four games and improved to 7-2 overall, while BU slipped to 6-3.
The host Terriers hung tough against the Hawks and trailed by just one point, 38-37, with 11:29 left in the game. Moran and junior
Colleen McGahan, however, keyed a 13-0 run midway through the half to break the game open. The game swung on a five-point possession by SJU at the 9:30 mark. McGahan drilled a three-pointer from the left of the arc and Moran, who set the pick to free her, was bowled over and fouled. Moran drained the ensuing free throws to put the Hawks up by seven points. McGahan then nailed another triple on the next possession to extend Saint Joseph's lead to 10-points, 47-47.
The Crimson and Gray pushed the lead to as many as 14-points and maintained a double-digit cushion for most of the rest of the game. McGahan finished with 13 points. -
In the first half, Moran strapped SJU on her back, as she tallied 17-points before the break. She helped the Crimson and Gray stave off a charge by BU. With the Hawks up by seven points, the Terriers battled back to take the lead, 16-14, with 5:21 to play before intermission. Moran, however, netted 11 of the Hawks final 16 points of the half and SJU went into the lockerroom with a 29-23 lead.
Moran's 30-point outburst was her third of the season. She joins Dale Hodges (1990) .as the only SJU players to net 30 or more points in three games in the same season. Moran also notched her fourth double-double of the year.
The Hawk women will now relax for the Christmas holiday, but return to action on December 28 and 29 to host the twelfth annual Hawk Classic. SJU faces Morgan State in the tournament semifinals on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Kansas squares off with Georgetown in the first semifinal at 5:00 p.m.
