COLGATE'S FAST START DOOMS HAWKS, 18-7

PHILADELPHIA (02/23/03) - For the second straight contest, the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell behind early and suffered defeat at Penn's Franklin Field in less than ideal conditions. Colgate (1-0) jumped out to a 12-1 lead, identical to last weekend's Hawk game against Delaware, and won its season opener, 18-7. The Red Raiders scored the first six goals of the game, two by Nick Gerken, before Saint Joseph's (0-2) senior Chris Spay scored an unassisted goal at the 7:08 mark of the second quarter. Colgate would then score the final two tallies of the half to take a 8-1 lead into the locker rooms. On Colgate's final goal of the half, scored by Jason Varas, SJU freshman goalkeeper Travis McDonnell was rolled into, injuring his right knee. He would leave the game after making six saves. Colgate continued the charge after the halftime intermission, scoring four more goals to increase its lead to 12-1. But the Hawks showed signs of life, scoring five of the next six tallies to make things interesting. At the 6:26 mark of the third quarter, senior Alex Heidenberger took a pass from freshman Keegan Wilkinson and beat CU keeper Andrew Jarolimek (eight saves) for a goal. Junior Brian Mullen responded just 10 seconds later with a goal of his own, assisted by classmate Matt Mueller. Junior Mike Elger would then win the ensuing face-off and race downfield for a goal, capping a flurry of scoring that included three goals in 30 seconds. Wilkinson, Spay and Heidenberger would score one more apiece to cut the Colgate lead to 13-7, but the Red Raiders scored the final five goals to put the game away. Sophomore Dan Morrissey replaced McDonnell and made eight saves. The Hawks were outshot 43-34 for the day. Peter Watts led Colgate with five goals and Varas added three. Scott Herbst and Jason Vander Muelen dished three assists each. Saint Joseph's returns home on Wednesday for its home opener against Drexel.
