BIG THIRD QUARTER RALLIES DELAWARE PAST SJU, 8-7

PHILADELPHIA (2/14/04) - Sophomore Alex McColough and senior Mike Pagliaro each scored two goals, but Delaware (1-0) rallied with five goals in the third quarter to defeat Saint Joseph's (0-1) in men's lacrosse action on Finnesey Field, 8-7. The game was the first college game in the nation this season. UD junior Joe Trentszch broke a 7-7 tie by scoring the only goal of the fourth quarter to give the hens the victory. SJU had led at halftime, 5-2, before a furious third quarter allowed Delaware to pull even. The Hawks took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of first quarter goals by McColough, but UD's Ryan Metzbower tallied with 12 seconds left in the opening quarter to cut the lead in half. St. Joe's outscored Delaware 3-1 in the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead in the intermission. Pagliaro scored twice and sophomore Keegan Wilkinson also had a marker. UD picked up a talley from Matt Alrich. SJU tallied on just one of six man-up opportunities, while UD was unable to score on the man advantage. SJU returns to action on February 28 at Colgate.
