VILLANOVA, PA (03/19/03) - Despite giving 18th-ranked Villanova (4-1) all it could handle for three periods, the Saint Joseph's men's Men's lacrosse team (3-5) dropped a tough 7-4 decision at Villanova Stadium. The hard-fought battle turned on three unaswered goals by the Wildcats in the final period of play.
Villanova scored first tallying a first quarter goal, but the Hawks responded by sandwiching a pair of markers around another Wildcat talley to make it a 2-2 game at intermission. Junior Brian Mullan collected the first Hawk goal and he assisted on senior Chris Spay's netter midway through the frame.
The teams exchanged a pair of goals each during the third quarter as sophomore Kevin McGrann and junior Matt Mueller scored for the Crimson and Gray. Mueller's score came with just :02 seconds to play in the period and put the Hawks in a frenzy entering the final 15 minutes.
Villanova's Marc Creegan tallied three goals in the final period to help VU pull away. The Wildcats controlled the ball the entire period and made the necessary stops to hold on to the victory, 7-4.
