PISCATAWAY, NJ (03/05/03) - Saint Joseph's took its first lead of the season early into the contest, but the host Scarlet Knights ran off 12 consecutive goals to down the Hawks, 15-4. Rutgers, ranked #16 by InsideLacrosse.com, improved to 4-0 for the the first time since 1975, while SJU dropped to 0-4.
After a RU goal at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter, the Crimson and Gray responded on a senior Chris Spay goal two minutes later. St. Joe's would take its first lead of the season almost three minutes later on a sophomore Kevin McGrann goal, assisted by Matt Mueller. But from that point on, it was all Rutgers, who scored 12 straight goals and held the Hawks scoreless for 39 minutes.
Senior Alex Heidenberger and junior Brian Mullan added fourth quarter goals in defeat. Sophomore keeper Dan Morrissey made eight saves in defeat.
Saint Joseph's will finally play its home opener on Saturday when the Hawks host Wagner at 2 pm on Finnesey Field.
