PHILADELPHIA (02/26/03) - Neither Franklin Field nor the frigid temperatures have treated the Hawk men's lacrosse team well this season. For the third time in as many tries, Saint Joseph's dropped a game on the turf on the historic stadium, this time to city rival Drexel, 11-5. St. Joe's fell behind early, as has been the case all season, as the Dragons jumped on the board first and held an 8-2 advantage at the half. Brendan Morgan scored an unassisted goal (7:18) and fed Pat Friel for another goal at the 5:37 mark. The Hawks responded with a goal of their own, as senior Chris Spay assisted on classmate Matt Durkin's first goal of the season. After a Drexel tally, the Hawk duo connected again, this time Spay finding the back of the net. The rest of the half was all Dragons, despite another Spay goal at the 1:07 mark. DU scored the first goal of the third quarter, but senior Alex Heidenberger took a pass from junior Mark Lipscomb and deposited in the cage to cut the Drexel lead to 9-4. Morgan and Spay traded the next to goals, leaving SJU within five tallies in the fourth, but couldn't muster enough offense to mount a comeback in the final stanza. Spay led the offense with three goals and an assist, while Drexel's Morgan had three goals and two assists. Jesse Rumble also had a hat trick for the Dragons. Sophomore Dan Morrissey earned the start in cage and stopped six shots. Will Melton made nine stops on the other end. The game was played with temperatures in the high teens.
