HAWK WOMEN FALTER AGAINST VIRGINIA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (11/24/02) - Twelve points from junior Amra Mehmedic were not enough to offset 28 Saint Joseph's turnovers, as SJU dropped a 66-37 decision to Virginia at University Hall. With the defeat, SJU opened at 0-2 for the first time sine 1995-96. UVA improved to 2-0 on the year. The Hawks kept the game close through much of the first half and trailed by just two points with 9:16 left. The deficit was just five, 23-18, at the 4:41 mark, but the Cavaliers finished the half on an 8-1 run to lead at the break by a dozen, 31-19. Virginia pulled away from the Crimson and Gray in the second half. The Cavaliers outscored the Hawks 35-18 after the break. Sophomore Brandi Teamer led Virginia with 11 points in the contest and LaTonya Blue added 10. Besides, Mehmedic, junior Irina Krasnoshiok added eight points. Stephanie Graff, who had 22 for SJU against Villanova on Friday, was limited to just four points on three shots. Virginia outshot the hawks from the field 40.0% to 29.2% and dominated the paint, outscoring SJU in the paint, 32-8.
