SJU SNAPS SIX-GAME SKID WITH 19-13 WIN AT MARIST

POUGHKEEPSIE (3/30/02)- Junior Alex Heidenberger tallied six goals and assisted on two others to lead Saint Joseph's to a 19-13 win over host Marist on Saturday afternoon. The win was the first of the year for the Hawks, snapping a six-game skid to start the season. Marist scored the first goal of the game, 2;28 into the opening period, but SJU answered with five of its own to take control. Heidenberger scored his first of the game to start the 5-0 span with senior Kevin Callaghan, who scored four on the day, capping the run with two goals. The Red Foxes scored three unanswered goals to cut the margin to one, 5-4, with 11:49 remaining in the second period, but Callaghan answered to push it to 6-4. Pat Van Horne tallied for Marist to cut it back to one, but SJU then scored three of the next four goals to end the half with a 9-6 lead. The teams traded goals at the start of the third period until SJU got back-to-back goals by junior Chris Spay and freshman Kevin McGrann to extend its lead to 13-9 with 2:26 left in the period.Marist's Brian Diehle made it 13-10, before the Hawks ran off four straight goals to ice the game. Besides Heidenberger and Callaghan, McGrann added three goals and three assists, Spay chipped in with three goals and one assist while Ed Walsh accounted for two goals and three assists. Josh Ben-Eliyahu led Marist with three goals. Senior Nick Leopard recorded 11 saves for SJU. The Hawks next play at Drexel on Saturday April 6 (noon).
