The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team opened the 2002 season at the United States Naval Academy Saturday afternoon. The Hawks, without the leadership of five starters including senior captains
Nick Leopard,
Kevin Callaghan and
Ed Walsh, dropped their first
game 16-2 to the Mids.
Seniors Leopard ,Callaghan and Walsh will sit out for the next four games due to University policies. In the meantime, junior
Alex Heidenberger netted the first of two goals for the Hawks while freshman newcomer
Kevin McGrann found the back of the net for the second and last goal of the afternoon.
Chris Spay added one assist for SJU.
The Navy MIds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game en route to a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks opened up the second half in a zone defense to try and slow down the agressive Mids. The Navy attack was held to only two goals in that quarter, but the Hawks remained with one goal at the end of the half 8-1.
At the 8:31 mark in the third quarter, McGrann scored an unassisted goal but it was not enough as the Mids outscored the Hawks 5-1 in that quarter to take a 13-2 lead. Navy scored their final three goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win over SJU 16-2.
Navy's offense proved too much for SJU as the Hawks managed only 15 shots to the MIds 44.
Freshman
Dan Morrissey made his collegiate debut at goal turning back 9 shots. Morrissey currently replaces Leopard in front of the net.
Sophomore Dave Pittard scored three goals and assisted on four others for the Mids
SJU (0-1) returns to action on Sunday, February 24, in a city showdown against Villanova at 1:00 PM on Finnesey Field.
