POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (05/02/03) -- Junior attack Brian Mullan netted the game-winning goal a minute and a half into the extra period as Saint Joseph's posted a 12-11 overtime victory over Providence in the second semifinal game of the 2003 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship this afternoon on Leonidoff Field at Marist College.
Down 10-9 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Hawks tied it all at the 13:14 minute mark as sophomore midfielder Andrew Four scored an unassisted goal. Providence would take the lead again with 7:05 left in regulation as senior attack Jon Meehan netted a shot from sophomore midfielder John Hollister. But Saint Joseph's would send the game in to overtime as freshman attack Keegan Wilkinson recorded his lone goal of the night off a pass from Mullan with 1:56 remaining. Mullan scored the game-winning shot with 2:30 left in overtime, assisted by Wilkinson, to seal the victory.
Saint Joseph's sophomore goalie Dan Morrissey and freshman netminder Travis McDonnell combined for four saves in the net, while Providence sophomore Andrew McMinn stopped three shots between the pipes.
The Hawks (6-8) will face Mount St. Mary's in the men's lacrosse championship game on Sunday, May 4, at 1:30 p.m. A win will secure the first NCAA berth in team history and it would also be the first non-basketball NCAA appearance sinec 1972.
