EMMITSBURG, MD (04/19/03) -- Saint Joseph's needed a win on Saturday to stay in the hunt MAAC regular season championship and a #1 seed in the conference tournament. But so did Mount St. Mary's, last year's runner-up to Manhattan. The home Mountaineers came out on a mission in taking a 10-1 halftime lead to coast to a 17-7 win over the Hawks. MSM is now tied with Providence at 6-1 in the league (7-6 overall), while SJU drops a game back at 5-2 (5-6 overall).
The Mount took a 4-0 lead before SJU got on the board on a senior Chris Spay tally with 5:45 to go in the first quarter. MSM would score four more on sophomore keeper Dan Morrissey (five saves) before head coach Paul Perdue made the switch to freshman Travis McDonnell, who hadn't seen action since February 23 against Colgate.
Two man-up goals by the Mountaineers would give the hosts a 10-1 lead heading into halftime. Spay scored the second half's first goal, but MSM would tack on three more to take a 13-2 lead, its largest of the contest.
Spay scored once more at the 1:34 mark of the third quarter and assisted on senior Alex Heidenberger's tally nearly a minute later to bring SJU within nine, but it would be as close as the Hawks would get on the day.
Sophomore Kevin McGrann added a goal before Spay ended his five-goal effort with the game's final two goals.
McDonnell ended his day with 10 saves in nearly 34 minutes of play. MSM outshot the Hawks 46-36 and collected 54 groundballs to SJU's 41.
SJU will travel to Providence for its final regular season game on Saturday, April 26. A win and a Mount St. Mary's loss would create a three-way tie for the first seed. The MAAC playoffs are scheduled for Friday, May 2 and Sunday, May 4 at Marist.
