HAWKS TORMENTED BY VILLANOVA IN HOME OPENER, 19-7

PHILADELPHIA, PA (2/24/02) - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team was tormented by the Villanova Wildcats Sunday afternoon during the Hawks season home opener. Junior Chris Spay led the way for SJU scoring three goals while assisting on two others. Senior Peter Franchetti scored four goals for the Wildcats en route to the 19-7 win. Villanova's David Cacciabeve scored in the third minute to give the Wildcats a quick 1-0 lead. An unassisted goal by Owen Corso in the 14th minute gave Villanova a 6-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks went into a zone defense in the second quarter slowing down the Wildcat attack as Villanova only scored once in the period. Saint Joseph's Matt Mueller scored the Hawks first and only goal of the half in the 18th minute. The Wildcats led at intermission, 7-1. Villanova blew the game out in the third quarter, outscoring Saint Joseph's 6-0 to take a 13-1 lead. Franchetti scored his third goal of the game at the eight minute mark and then assisted on a Marc Creegan goal 30 seconds later to close out the quarter. Saint Joseph's received a spark from junior Matt Durkin as he scored an unassisted goal 14 seconds into the final quarter. Alex Heidenberger responded two minutes later finding the back of the net off a feed from Spay. Spay then continued on, scoring three goals in a five-minute period to make the game appear close. It wasn't enough as Villanova posted six more goals in the final frame en route to a 19-7 win. Freshman goalie Dan Morrissey protected the net for the Hawks turning away 12 shots. Saint Joseph's, now 0-2 on the season will face neighboring Pennsylvania, Tuesday , March 5 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be held on Finnesey Field.
