MEN'S LAX FALLS TO MOUNT ST. MARY'S IN SEASON FINALE, 16-12

PHILADELPHIA (5/01/04) --The Saint Joseph's University Hawks fell to Mount St. Mary's College by a score of 16-12 on Finnesey Field. The match marked the final game for SJU seniors, Mike Elger, Ryan Madairy, Brian Mullan, Matt Mueller and Mike Pagliaro, who scored four goals in his last game. Sophomore Andrew Four added five goals for the Hawks in a losing effort. With the loss, the Hawks dropped their record to 4-10 and 3-5 in the MAAC, while the Mountaineers closed out the season with a 5-8 record overall and 5-3 in the conference.

Mount St. Mary jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage, before Andrew Four got the Hawks on the scoreboard with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter. The Mountaineers would score another goal late in the quarter to make the score 4-1. St. Joe's came out firing in the second quarter, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the period when Mike Pagliaro's first goal, and Four's second tally cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Mount St. Mary's responded with two goals of their own to increase their lead back to 6-3. Four would score his third goal of the game for the Hawks to cut into the lead, but the Mountaineers closed out the half with three goals over the final 3:41 to give them a 9-4 lead at the half.

St. Joe's started the scoring in the second half when Andrew Four found the back of the net for the fourth time to make the score 9-5, but Mount St. Mary's answered once again with four goals to give them a commanding 13-5 lead. The Hawks rallied late in the period when Four and Pagliaro each scored a goal in the final 15 seconds to make the score 13-7 heading into the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers scored first in the final period, but the Hawks answered with goals by Frank Abruzzini and Brian Ponne. Mount St. Mary's scored twice more and a late Hawk rally, with a pair of goals from Pagliaro and a tally from senior Mike Elger would come up short as the Hawks fell by the final score of 16-12.
