HAWK NETTERS EDGE VILLANOVA, 4-3 FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1978

PHILADELPHIA (03/31/03) - Saint Joseph's won its sixth straight match on Monday with a 4-3 home victory over Big Five rival Villanova, marking its first win over the Wildcats since 1978. The doubles point proved to be the difference as each team split the six singles matches. The six straight wins is the most since the 1978 Hawks did the trick on their way to a 8-0 record. Sophomore Francisco Velazquez was a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 winner at first singles. Freshman Greg Chang (6-1, 6-1) at fourth singles and classmate Antonio Aniello (6-2, 6-4) at fifth singles were the only SJU winners. But it was the doubles performance that upped the Hawks record to 10-5 on the spring. At second doubles, Velazquez teamed with current Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Van Homer Pangilinan to record an 8-3 win. At number three, Aniello and Chang earned a tough 8-7 (3) win that was the eventual match-winner. SJU returns to the Finnesey Courts on Wednesday when it hosts Monmouth at 2:45 p.m.
