HAWKS RECORD FIRST CONFERENCE WIN WITH 15-8 VICTORY OVER SIENA

PHILADELPHIA (3/18/04)- Saint Joseph's opened up a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and captured its first conference win of the season with a 15-8 victory over Siena at Franklin Field on Thursday afternoon. A trio of Hawks tallied three or more goals, led by sophomore Keegan Wilkinson (four goals, two assists), as SJU improved to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC. Senior Matt Mueller kicked things off three minutes into the game with his first of four goals on the day. After Siena's Matthew Walsh found the back of the net, the Crimson and Gray scored four straight to take a 5-1 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter. Mueller started the 4-0 run with his second tally and was followed by seniors Mike Pagliaro, Mike Elger, and redshirt freshman Alex McColough. The Saints broke the spurt with an Eric Hungershafer goal late in the first quarter, but SJU responded with a man-up goal from junior Andrew Four and another tally from Mueller. Siena (0-1, 0-1 MAAC) drew within 7-4 after scoring two goals in nine seconds in the second quarter, but would get no closer as the Hawks scored eight of the next 12 goals to finish with a 15-8 victory. Four added a hat-trick and senior Brian Mullan dished a team-high four assists. Sophomore Travis McDonnell stopped 11 shots for the win. Walsh recorded a hat-trick to pace the Saint, while John Bamford stopped eight shots to absorb the loss. SJU held a 41-36 advantage in shots and a 43-30 lead in groundballs. SJU has little time to prepare for its next game, a MAAC tilt at VMI on Saturday.
