PHILADELPHIA (03/29/03) - Saint Joseph's opened the game with five unanswered goals and withstood torrential downpours and a late Manhattan charge to defeat the defending MAAC champions, 13-10, on a wet Finnesey Field turf Saturday. The Hawks are now in the driver's seat in the conference with a 4-1 league mark (4-6 overall). MC drops to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Junior Brian Mullan scored the first of his three goals just 35 seconds into the game off a pass from classmate Ryan Madairy. A minute later senior Chris Spay found the back of the net to give SJU a quick 2-0 lead. Madairy scored four minutes later, followed by a Mullan goal and another Spay tally right before the end of the quarter put the Hawks up 5-0.
After two Manhattan tallies, the Hawks would receive two consecutive goals from senior Alex Heidenberger, the latter an acrobatic shot off a feed from freshman Keegan Wilkinson. Spay would score the half's final goal giving SJU a 8-2 lead at intermission.
The defending champions wouldn't go down easy, scoring all four goals in the third quarter to bring the score to 8-6. But Durkin would start the fourth quarter with two face-off wins that led to goals just 23 seconds into the fourth quarter. Saint Joseph's would tack on two more insurance goals, including freshman Kyle Manchin's first collegiate tally, and hold off a late Jasper charge to snap a two-game losing streak.
The second half was played in heavy downpours, leading to a slick Finnesey Field turf. Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Morrisey played well in the net, making 13 saves.
