PROVIDENCE, RI (04/26/03) - Saint Joseph's raced to a 2-0 lead, but Providence scored nine of the next 10 goals to clinch the #2 seed in the MAAC Tournament with a 9-3 home win over the Hawks. SJU, which has lost its last two contests, will be a #3 seed and face-off against Providence on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Senior Alex Heidenberger got things started off a pass from freshman Keegan Wilkinson at the 9:38 mark of the first quarter. Senior Matt Durkin follwed three minutes later with a goal of his own to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
But from that point on, it was all Friars. David Kole and John Hollister scored two goals late in the first quarter to tie the score at two. PC tacked on four more goals before Hawk senior Chris Spay scored a man-up goal to cut the Friar lead to 6-3.
Providence scored the game's final three goals to improve to 7-8 overall and 7-1 in the MAAC. SJU drops to 5-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
Sophomore Dan Morrissey stopped nine shots in the net, as did PC keeper Andrew McMinn.
Mount St. Mary's wrapped up the top seed with a 17-12 home win over VMI, knocking the Keydets out of the postseason. The Mountaineers take on Canisuis, who earned the fourth seed via a 10-4 win over Wagner.
The tournament begins Friday, May 2 at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. MSM and Canisuis tangle at 5:00 p.m., while the Hawks and Friars face-off at 7:30 p.m. The winners meet on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for a MAAC Championship and MAAC automatic bid.
