HAWKS HOLD OFF SAINTS, 13-11, IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

RUTGERS TOPS HAWKS, 14-3

PHILADELPHIA, PA (3/20/02) - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team lost its sixth game of the season Wednesday night to Rutgers. The Hawks fell 14-3 to the Scarlet Knights on a rainy and wet Finnesey Field. Junior Chris Spay led the way for SJU, scoring all three Hawk goals while sophomore Tim White scored four goals for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers dominated the field at the start of the first quarter, but the game remained scoreless as the Hawks' defense contained the visitor's attack. Just inside the six-minute mark, White connected off a pass from Jamie Lovejoy to open the game at 1-0. Two minutes later Spay caught a feed from Ryan Madairy and blasted one into the net, tying the game. With three minutes left in the period the Scarlet Knights scored again setting the trend for the second period as Rutgers scored five unanswered goals while holding the Hawks scoreless in the second stanza. The Scarlet Knights led at the half 7-1. In the third quarter Spay tallied in the first minute off a Kevin McGrann assist. It was the last time SJU would score in the period as Rutgers blasted six goals into the back of the Hawk net to up its lead to 13-2. In the final period each team scored one goal in a defensive showdown. McGrann again found Spay among the sea of Scarlet jerseys to pummel a shot into Knights' net. Rutgers answered with a the game's final tally.. Freshman Dan Morrissey protected the net for the Hawks turning away 21 shots. Saint Joseph's, now 0-6 on the season, will hit the road for a two-game stretch. SJU next competes March 30 at Marist. Rutgers improves to 2-5.
