CHESTER, Pa. (4/18/04) - National Player of the Year
Jameer Nelson will be honored by his hometown as the City of Chester holds a "Jameer Nelson Day of Recognition" on Monday, April 19.
The program take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Chester High School, followed by a public rally at the District Athletic Field.
Nelson will be honored along with fellow Chester native Kevin Jones, a football standout from Virginia Tech. Both Nelson and Jones, who are expected to be high picks in the upcoming NBA and NFL drafts, will be recognized for their character and athletic achievements.
The event will include a keynote address by Hawks' coach Phil Martelli and Nelson will be presented with keys to the City and his high school jersey will be retired.
Martelli and the Hawks will be honored a few more times during the week. The team will pay a visit to Philadelphia City Hall on Tuesday, April 20, where Mayor John Street will present the team with the keys to the city. That program will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Later that day, Saint Joseph's will be honored by the Phillies, with Martelli throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Citizen Bank Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
