Senior Jimmy Holland was edged in a thrilling three-set match at first singles, as Manhattan rallied to defeat Saint Joseph's at the 2005 ECAC Championships held at the National Tennis Center, 4-3. The Hawks placed 12th in the 16 team field at the Eastern Championships.
Holland took the first set against the Jaspers' ace Zolton Bus, 6-3, but Bus rallied to win the second set 7-5 and then took the final set 6-4 to give Manhattan the win.
SJU took the early lead by winning the doubles point. Holland and classmate Antonio Aniello were victors at first singles, 8-4. Freshman Pat Adams and senior Chris Spencer then secured the point with an 8-5 victory at third doubles. MC won the final doubles match 9-8 over freshmen Phil Bayliss and A.J. Garabedian at number two.
The Hawks received easy singles wins from Adams and Bayliss at third and sixth singles, respectively. Adams notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory, while Bayliss was a 6-0, 6-3 winner.
Manhattan rallied to pick up wins at number 2 over Spencer (6-4, 6-2), Garabedian (6-3, 6-0) and Aniello (6-1, 6-1).
