Senior Antonio Aniello advanced to the second round of the Flight B singles section at the 2005 Penn Classic played at the Levy Tennis Pavillion on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Also reaching the second round were the doubles pairings of Aniello and senior Jimmy Holland, along with freshmen Phil Bayliss and Brian Costello.
Seeded sixth in the section, Aniello easily handled Temple's Jon Sy (6-1, 6-1). He was then edged in one of the best matches of the tournament by St. John's Alex Svetlakou in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 7-6).
Bayliss and classmate Brent Kahl also were unable to advance out ot the B Flight. Bayliss dropped a close 6-4, 7-5 match to Columbia's Ilia Shatasvili, while Kahl was bested by Columbia's Jake Feldman (6-0, 6-3).
In doubles, Aniello and Holland received an opening round bye as the second seed, but were abruptly upset in teh second round by Maryland's Mike Coleman and Louie-Xavier Lavalle, the B Flight singles champ, 8-4.
Bayliss and Costello won their opening round match versus Rutgers Andrew Tervooren and Gabe Adams, 8-4. They were then defeated in the second round, however, by Penn's Tas Tobais and Jimmy Fairbanks, 8-5.
None of the Hawks in the A Flight were able to advance with Holland, the seventh seed falling to Penn's Justin Fox (1-6, 6-3, 6-3); senior Chris Spencer dropping a decision to the Quakers Tas Tobias (6-1, 7-6 (6)); and freshman Patrick Adams falling to Radford's Martin Sayer (6-4, 6-4).
Spencer and Adams also paierd in doubles, but were defeated 8-1.
