Women's Lacrosse Falls To American, 11-9

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early three goal lead, but couldn't hold off American's offense as the Eagles downed the Hawks 11-9 Wednesday evening at Finnesey Field.

Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first half thanks to a pair of goals from the stick of sophomore Jen Egan. Sophomore Kristina Jaggers gave the Hawks the three-goal lead at 11:20.

Both teams would add one goal apiece before the horn as Saint Joseph's held a 6-3 advantage at halftime.

In the second stanza, American scored six of the first seven goals to take a 9-7 lead. After both teams exchanged goals to open the half, the Eagles went on a five-goal run to gain their first lead since 2-1. Moriah Linell tied the game with her goal at 17:38 and put American up on an unassisted goal at 16:43.

Both teams would score two goals apiece over the final 15 minutes, as American did a good job of maintaining possession late to run out the clock.

For the game, American out shot Saint Joseph's 24-21, and 10-6 in the second half. Hawk's senior goalkeeper Courtney Huff made nine saves in the losing effort

Individually, Egan paced the Hawks with four goals, while junior attacker Kerry O'Connell added three goals. Jaggers and junior Lindsay Brown accounted for the other two SJU goals.

Linnell led American in scoring with four goals and two assist, while Chelsea Kapp and Sarah Milewski added two goals apiece. Kathleen Finnegan made nine saves between the pipes to earn the victory.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-1 on the season, while American improves to 2-3.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday at Lehigh at 1 p.m.
