The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team opened up strong against the 16th ranked Temple Owls, but saw their early 2-0 lead disappear as the Owls downed the Hawks 14-10 in SJU's Atlantic 10 opener Friday evening at Finnesey Field.
Saint Joseph's junior Kerry O'Connell opened up the scoring, tallying the first goals of the game to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead four minutes into the game.
Temple responded, scoring six goals over the next 15 minutes to take a 6-2 lead on an Allison Frengs goal at 11:54.
The Hawks responded with two quick goals by O'Connell and sophomore Jen Egan to cut the deficit to two, 6-4, with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Unfortunately for Saint Joseph's, gave up three late goals in the opening stanza to find itself down 9-4 at the half.
Despite trailing by five, the Hawks came out fired up in the second half, scoring five of the first seven goals to cut the Temple lead to 11-9 on an Egan goal at 12:19.
The Owls responded, scoring three of the final four goals to hold off Saint Joseph's.
For the game, Temple out shot the Hawks 32-20, with Saint Joseph's senior goalkeeper Courtney Huff making 12 saves in the loss.
Individually, O'Connell led the Hawks with five goals, while Egan and freshman Lindsey-Kate McCool tallied two goals apiece. Junior Lindsay Brown was the only other Hawk to record a goal.
Frengs led Temple with six goals as seven other Owls tallied at least one goal.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Temple improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in A-10 play.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday at noon at Massachusetts.
