The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team, behind a pair of goals from freshmen Ashley Bugnar and Lauren Stevis, earned a 2-1 victory at Rutgers Sunday evening.
Despite being outshot 4-1 in the first half, the Hawks made their one shot count. Freshman forward Ashley Bugnar collected a loose ball in the right corner of Rutgers' box and snuck it inside the left post to put the Hawks up 1-0 in the 40th minute.
Saint Joseph's continued to make its shots count as the Hawks took a 2-0 lead on their second shot of the game. Off a free kick, junior forward Megan Schutt controlled the ball for the Hawks at the left post. Schutt turned and struck a perfect pass to rookie Lauren Stevis in the middle of the box. Stevis' ball sailed to the back of the net to put Saint Joseph's up 2-0 at 50:18.
Rutgers cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 58th minute, but the Hawks' senior goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna turned in another stellar performance making one of her game-high three saves over the final 30 minutes to preserve the victory.
For the game, the Scarlet Knights outshot the Hawks 6-2. Bugnar and Stevis collected both shots for Saint Joseph's, while Schutt was credited with the assist on the game winner.
Danae Risoli and Kristin Edmonds both posted two shots on net apiece for Rutgers.
With the victory, the Hawks improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Scarlet Knights fall to 2-1.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. at George Mason.
