Fast Start Carries Delaware Over SJU in Men's Lax, 9-5

PHILADELPHIA - Delaware (1-0) used a five goal first quarter to build up a 7-1 halftime lead and hold on for a 9-5 victory over Saint Joseph's (0-1) on Finnesey Field. For the second consecutive season SJU and UD opened the NCAA Division I Lacrosse season. Senior Andrew Four tallied twice for the Hawks, while UD's Marty Kuprion netted four goals.

UD's Dan Deckelbaum started the scoring with an unassisted tally just 1:14 into the contest. Kuprion followed with three of his four goals over the next three minutes, including one on the power play. Only a goal by Four off an assist from Mike O'Neill at 12:09 of the first quarter broke up the UD run.

The Hens added another goal by Dan Hechtkopf late in the first quarter and added scores by Beau Davis and Cam Howard in teh second quarter to take a 7-1 lead at halftime.

The teams played evenly in the third quarter as O'Neill scored an unassisted goal for the Hawks and Kuprion netted his fourth for Delaware.

SJU put on a late surge in the fourth quarter, outscoring Delaware 3-1 down the stretch to close the gap. Four scored his second 1:15 into the final period off an assist from Alex Lopes. Lopes then tallied with 4:59 remaining to make the score 8-4.

UD received insurance as Kyle Rotelli with 2:14 remaining before Keegan Wilkinson closed out the scoring with an unassisted talley for his 100th career point.

Freshman Eric Hotaling made three stops for teh Hawks in goal, while UD's Tommy Scherr had 10 saves.

UD's Alex Smith won 15-18 faceoffs in the game and Delaware went 1-5 in man-up opportunities. SJU was 0-1 on the extra-man. Thanks to a late flurry SJU outshot Delaware 31-22, while the Hens picked up 25 ground balls to 18 for the Hawks.
