SWARTHMORE, PA - The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team (4-2) split a pair of weekend matches dropping a 6-1 decision at Navy on Saturday, before returning to Philadelphia to cruise past nationally-ranked Division III power Swarthmore by an identical 6-1 score.

Steady play throughout the lineup helped carry the Hawks to a 6-1 victory at Swarthmore at the Mullan Tennis Center. SJU won five of the six singles matches and took two of three decisions in doubles to secure the win.

Senior A.J. Garabedian and freshman Phil Bayliss got things started for SJU by notching an 8-2 win at first doubles and the squad secured the doubles point when Chris Spencer and Brian Costello registerdan 8-5 win at third doubles.

In singles, Pat Adams stepped up to play at #1 and recorded a 6-2, 7-5 win. Spencer was edged at #2 (6-1, 6-2), but the Hawks swept the third through sixth slots. Garabedian won 6-4, 7-5 at #3, senior Antonio Aniello posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at #4, Bayliss did not drop a game winning 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and freshman Brent Kahl won 6-4, 6-2 at #6.

At Navy on Saturday, the Hawks played well and the match was much tighter than the final score would indicate, but SJU could muster just one singles and one doubles victory. Garabedian edged USNA's Adrian Lai at third singles 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 in a super tie-break. In doubles, Adams and Spencer won 8-6 at #2.

Other tight matches saw Adams fall at #1 (6-3, 7-5) and both Chris Spencer (#2 - 6-2, 3-6, 10-5) and Phil Bayliss (#5 - 6-4, 6-7, 10-1) lost in super tie-breaks. In doubles Bayliss and Garabedian fell 9-7 at #1.
