Freshman Pat Adams capped a thrilling Saint Joseph's (5-4) comeback with a third set tie-break victory that helped the Hawks upend Army, 4-3. SJU battled back from a 3-1 deficit to claim the victory thanks to three three set wins.
SJU opened the afternoon by taking the doubles point by wining two of the three matches. Seniors Jimmy Holland and Antonio Aniello won 8-6 at #1, while Adams and senior Chris Spencer were also 8-6 winners at #3. Senior A.J. Garabedian and freshman Phil Bayliss were edged by an identical 8-6 score.
Army took charge of the match and built a 3-1 lead by posting straight set wins at second, fifth and sixth singles.
SJU then began to mount its comeback. Holland and Garbedian each took early leads, winning the first set, and then had to rally to win the third set to earn wins. Holland was victorious at number one, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and Garbedian won at third, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Adams had to mount a more improbable comback after losing the opeing set 6-2 at number four. He rallied and won in a third set tie-break, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
