Saint Joseph's was able to hold off Villanova and runaway with the lead in the second half as the Hawks won 14-8 Tuesday night at Finnesey Field. Captain Kerry O'Connell led the Hawks with five goals and two assists.
Saint Joseph's opened up the scoring with a free position goal by Lindsey-Kate McCool. The game went on to be a back and forth match for most of the first half. The score was tied at 5-5 half way in when the Hawks took the lead and started to pull away. O'Connell scored off a quick pass from Karen Wiley to take the lead and then Jenny Egan scored with an assist by Jen Fletcher to bring the score to 7-5. Villanova attempted to answer back with a goal of their own at 8:10 but a minute later SJU netted another goal, this time by Wiley from O'Connell. The first half ended with the Hawks in the lead 8-6.
The Hawks came out strong in the second half adding to their lead two minutes in with another O'Connell goal assisted by McCool. Saint Joseph's continued to widen the gap adding unassisted goals by Christina Colangelo (2), and O'Connell (1), along with a goal by Colangelo assisted by O'Connell and O'Connell's fifth goal, assisted again by McCool.
Junior Goalkeeper Sarah Magan played a stand out game, facing eight free position shots and allowing only three in.
Saint Joseph's picked up 41 groundballs, 10 more than Villanova, and got off 26 shots. Also notching a goal for SJU was Jessica Westlake assisted by Colleen Inglesby.
The Hawks return to action Friday, April 28th in a conference game against #12 Richmond at 3:00pm. Be sure to come out and join us for our last game of the season Sunday, April 30th at home against Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure at noon.
