PHILADELPHIA -
A late first half goal led to Massachusetts earning a 1-0 victory over the Saint Joseph's field hockey team Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. Christine Rodgers scored her first goal of the season to provide the margin. SJU senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer made six saves for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's (7-7, 2-2 Atlantic 10) dominated play early on, spending most of the first half in the offensive end. The Hawks notched five penalty corner opportunities in the first eight minutes of the game, but could only muster one shot on goal as the Minutewomen blocked three SJU attempts before they reached the cage.
The game remained scoreless until the last three minutes of the first half, when Massachusetts (8-7, 3-1 Atlantic 10) managed to break through. A long, high shot was sent in toward the cage and deflected by an SJU defender. Rodgers picked up the rebound and put it into the cage for the 1-0 lead.
The Hawks had the best scoring opportunity in a back and forth second half, as SJU was awarded a penalty corner with seven minutes remaining in the game. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, a blast by freshman Jen Wrublesky headed for the top corner was saved by UMass keeper Becky Letourneau, who made two saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
For the game, Massachusetts outshot SJU 10-7. The Hawks earned seven corners to four for the Minutewomen.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Friday with an Atlantic 10 matchup at West Chester. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
