Box Score
WEST CHESTER, Pa. -
Standout rookie Jen Wrublesky scored two goals in the first 5:25 of the game to power Saint Joseph's past the West Chester Rams, 6-0, in Atlantic 10 field hockey action on Friday. Sophomore midfielder Kellie Walter contributed a goal and two assists to the Hawk effort.
Saint Joseph's (8-7, 3-2 Atlantic 10) carried the play early, and Wrublesky scored her first goal of the game just over 100 seconds after the opening whistle. She added her second tally of the day, her sixth of the season, at the 5:25 mark to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Freshman Casey Fry then added her first career goal at the 8:49 mark to pad the SJU lead.
West Chester (5-10, 2-3 Atlantic 10) could not muster much of an offensive threat throughout the half, and were forced to change goalkeepers halfway through the period. In all, SJU outshot the Rams 11-5 in the first half, and 19-8 for the game.
In the second half, SJU continued to maintain its offensive pressure, breaking through once again at the 46:05 mark on a goal by sophomore Anne Schreuders. The Hawks weren't finished, as Walter scored an unassisted goal, her second of the season, with 4:19 remaining in the game. Just over a minute later, junior Laura Hackenberger tallied her first goal with the Crimson and Gray on a penalty stroke opportunity. The tally closed the scoring and provided the Hawks with the final six-goal margin of victory.
The 6-0 win is the largest margin of victory for the Hawks since they defeated Fairfield by the same score on September 16, 2006 at Finnesey Field.
Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer made four saves, two in each half, to earn her third shutout of the season. She now has 16 for her career, two shy of the Saint Joseph's career record of 18, and is in sole possession of second place on the all-time list.
SJU returns to action on Sunday afternoon for an Atlantic 10 tilt at city rival La Salle. Game time is scheduled for noon.
