Men's Lacrosse Falls to Delaware in Season Opener, 23-6

NEWARK, DE - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team opened their 2007 season with a loss on the road to Delaware, 23-6, Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. Sean Cullinan, Mike O'Neill, Peter Slowik, and Steve Varga combined for SJU's six goals.

The Blue Hens jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the Hawks scored their first goal on a tally by junior Sean Cullinan with 4:18 remaining in the first half. Junior Steve O'Brien assisted on the play, his first of two for the day.

Delaware went on to outscore Saint Joseph's 5-0 in the third quarter to take a 17-1 lead but the Hawks jump-started their offense when freshman Peter Slowik scored his first goal in the Crimson and Gray off and assist from sophomore Alex Lopes. The Blue Hens quickly added three more goals to pad the lead to 22-2 but the Hawks refused to go down without a fight. SJU scored four of the game's final five goals over the last 7:36 of the contest. Slowik scored his second goal off another assist from Lopes, followed by an unassisted goal by senior Mike O'Neill. Junior Steve Varga added a goal with an assist by Slowik at 5:13. The final goal came at 4:27 with Cullinan's second of the season with another assist from O'Brien.

Delaware was ranked #19 in the pre-season Inside Lacosse/Faceoff Yearbook poll for the 2007 season.

The Hawks had 15 shots for the day and 23 groundballs. SJU went 17-25 on clears for the day. Saint Joseph's goalie Erik Hotaling had 20 saves for the day.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, February 17th as they travel to Annapolis, MD to take on Navy. Game time is set for 12:00pm.
