The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team beat out Providence, 7-6 in a fight to the finish Saturday, March 31st, at the Friar Lacrosse Complex. The Hawks had the Friars down 6-3 after three quarters of play, before the Friars attempted a comeback that came within a goal. Saint Joseph's move to 3-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Peter Slowik got the Hawks on the board with 4:46 left in the first period. Alex McColough added another goal before the end of the period off a pass from Slowik. The Friars managed to tie the score in the second period with a man-up goal and an even goal with 2 minutes remaining. McColough put SJU back on top with just three seconds left to make the score 3-2 going into the half.
The Hawks opened the third stanza by adding two more to their tally from Steve O'Brien and Zach Charles. Chad Dudley notched a goal assisted by Alex Lopes to make it 6-3 going into the last quarter.
Providence started an offensive charge, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Alex Lopes found the back of the net of a pass from Mike O'Neill to hold the lead to two. The Friars managed to score one more goal on a man-up opportunity but could not overcome the Hawks' defense before time expired.
SJU had 14 shots for the day and 16 groundballs. The Hawks completed 10 clears in the contest.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 7th in a home match-up against VMI. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
