A two-run triple off the bat of freshman Brooke Darreff helped the Saint Joseph's softball team earn a 3-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Fordham Saturday. The Hawks split the series with the Rams after dropping the opener, 3-2.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Saint Joseph's got a leadoff single by senior Christa Lane Hooper. Advancing to third after a SJU single and Fordham throwing error, Hooper tied the game at one on an fielder's choice by Dani Gonzales. Gonzales would reach safely, beating out the throw by Fordham's second baseman. With two runners on and two outs, Darreff tripled to deep right centerfield, scoring Gonzales and sophomore Erika Rosenwinkel to put the Hawks up 3-1.
Fordham cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but worked around troble in the final three innings as the Rams stranded four runners, while the Hawks held on for the win. Gonzels allowed only one earned run, while striking out six in the victory.
In the opener, Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBIs by Junior Carly Kinkler and sophomore Kelsey Moir.
The Rams fought back with a run in the bottom of the third, and took a 3-2 edge in the bottom of the fifth on RBI-single by Krystle Henry and Melissa Andrews.
With the split, the Hawks improve to 7-17 on the year and 2-4 in Atlantic 10 play. Fordham moves to 25-13 overall and 9-1 in conference action.
