Saint Joseph's men's soccer fell at the hands of the Penn Quakers, 4-0, Saturday night at Finnesey Field. SJU dropped its fifth game in a row overall, and third straight to a Soccer Seven rival.
Penn jumped on the Hawks quickly with an Andrew Ferry goal less than six minutes into the game. Ferry would strike again, scoring his second goal of the night in the 29th minute.
Although down 2-0 at halftime, SJU held the pace of play after the initial onslaught, settling down with four corner kicks and five shots in the first half.
However, Penn's counterattack in the second half proved to be too much for Saint Joseph's. Loukas Tasigianis scored for the Quakers just four minutes into the second stanza for an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
SJU let the pace of play get away from them and Penn started possess the ball more often and find more scoring opportunities. With the Hawks switching up its formation late in the game, sending defenders and midfielders into the attack, Penn countered with a late goal in the 82nd minute from Omid Shokoufandeh.
Saint Joseph's had several opportunities to score, but couldn't put a shot on net. Their best chance came just before halftime when Giacomo DiLisi sent a header just over the crossbar.
For the game Saint Joseph's was outshot 17-10. Bryan Benedict had four saves in net for SJU.
Penn improved to 2-4-2 on the year, while the Hawks dropped to 1-6-0. Saint Joseph's travels to play at New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, October 6, kick-off is 2:00 p.m.
