Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Senior forward Krista Bordogna scored just over a minute into the game and senior Marisa Pizzi and sophomore Jen Wrublesky added goals as Saint Joseph's held on to defeat West Chester, 3-2, in Atlantic 10 field hockey action on Sunday evening.

Saint Joseph's (10-4 overall, 2-0 Atlantic 10) never trailed in the game, as Bordogna tipped in a long pass from freshman Theresa Testa to stake the Hawks to an early lead 1:04 into the contest.

West Chester (5-8 overall, 0-2 Atlantic 10) would equalize seven minutes later as Brittany Cislak had her shot deflect into the cage to knot the game at one. The score remained tied for the rest of the half despite SJU enjoying a 10-3 advantage in shots.

The Hawks would go ahead to stay early in the second half when Pizzi lifted her own rebound over WCU goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss to put SJU on top, 2-1, at the 38:27 mark. Wrublesky followed eight minutes later with a goal on a penalty corner. Assists went to juniors Kellie Walter and Jennifer Schultz.

The Rams would close within one with just under 13 minutes to go as Lauren DuBois took a pass from Alex Swayze, then spun around in front of SJU keeper Kelly Swanick and put the ball into the cage. West Chester would come no closer, as DuBois' goal would be the only shot registered by the Rams in the final stanza.

Swanick made one save in the game while Zarefoss was busy, stopping 12 SJU shots, six in each half. The Hawks enjoyed an 11-4 advantage in penalty corner opportunities and a 26-4 advantage in shots.

The Hawks will head on the road Friday for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Richmond. Next Sunday SJU will host Saint Louis in a game to be played at West Chester University at 11:00 a.m.
