BOTETOURT, VA -
The Saint Joseph's softball team capped play at the Hokies United Memorial Tournament Sunday, falling to Rutgers 1-0 in eight innings and Villanova, 10-4, in the nightcap.
In the opener, both the Hawks (1-3) and Rutgers were scoreless after the first seven innings, forcing an extra frame.
In the top of the eighth, Saint Joseph's had runners at second and third with one out, but failed to get a hit as Rutgers retired the final two batters to keep the game scoreless.
In the bottom half of the inning, Rutgers tallied the lone run on a one-out force play to earn the victory.
Versus Villanova, the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 edge, but the Hawks answered back with a run in the bottom of third on a RBI single by freshman Dana Bieniek.
Villanova answered with four runs in the top of the fourth, but Saint Joseph's came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Unfortunately for SJU, the Hawks' offense couldn't muster another run as Villanova added two insurance runs late.
The Hawks return to action March 4 with a doubleheader versus Michigan State in Clearwater, Florida.
