PHILADELPHIA--The SJU women's lacrosse team defeated the Wagner Seahawks 11-3 on snowy Finnesey Field Wednesday evening. Saint Joseph's (2-1) was led by Christina Colangelo and Jenna Martino's matching three goals, as well as Lindsey-Kate McCool's four assists. Wagner (0-1) dropped its season opener.
The Hawks came out of the gate slow, but ran off four goals to end the first half, led by Courtney McManama's pair late in the half. Her first goal was a free-position shot, and the second was unassisted to make it 6-2.
SJU's four-goal halftime lead grew early in the second half as the Hawks shut the door on Wagner with alternating goals by Colangelo and Martino. Three of the five goals scored by the senior duo were assisted by classmate Lindsey-Kate McCool, which streched the lead to the largest of the game at 11-2 with 15:54 remaining in the game.
From there, the Hawks substituted its reserves, Wagner added a goal with 10 minutes left and SJU played non-pressure offense to seal the win.
Suzy Herlihy was a rock in net for the Hawks, stopping eight shots, three of which were free-position attempts. Her counterpart, Alex Johnston stopped 10 Hawk shots for Wagner in the losing effort.
For the game SJU outshot the Seahawks 30-18, 14-6 in the second half alone. The Hawks were also the agreesor, winning 22 ground balls to Wagner's 13 while forcing 16 Seahawk turnovers. On top of that, Saint Joseph's shut Wagner out of draw controls in the second half, 7-0.
SJU will travel to Norfolk, Va. on Monday to take on Old Dominion, game time is 3:00 p.m.
