The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell behind 4-0 early to Colgate and could never recover in a 10-4 loss in Hamilton, N.Y. this afternoon. CU's Kevin Colleluori tallied four goals and two assists to lead the Raiders. Scott Cullinan led the Hawks with a goal and an assist.
In a game played on a chilly, 10-degree afternoon, the Hawks sputtered out of the gate, overpowered by the Raiders. Colgate put 14 towards the SJU cage, hitting the back of the net four times. Steve Varga stopped the bleeding wiht an unassisted goal to start a small Hawk rally.
After another Colgate goal to start the second period, Joey D'Avanzo scored to cut the lead to 5-2 with 7:19 remaining. Two Colgate goals stopped any momentum Saint Joseph's had to end the half with a 7-2 lead.
Andrew Mandela opened the second half with a goal for SJU assisted by Cullinan. Colgate would stretch the lead with a paid of goals to make it 9-3 before Cullinan tallied a late third-period goal. CU capitalized on a man-up situation to cap the scoring at 10-4 in the fourth quarter.
For the game, both teams had 37 shots, while Colgate saw 23 of those be on goal to SJU's 16. Erik Hotaling had 13 saves in net for the Hawks.
SJU falls to 0-3 on the season, while Colgate picked up its first win of the year to improve to 1-2. The Hawks are next in action when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Bellarmine Knights at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
