PHILADELPHIA--Delaware used six straight goals over a nine-minute stretch to open up a two-goal game en route to an 18-10 victory at Finnesey Field. Scott Cullinan tallied four goals and Steve Varga added three to lead the Hawks. UD's Vincent Giordino led the Hens with five goals.
Delaware opened the scoring early with a Martin Cahill goal just 1:25 into the contest. The Hawks would rally and take the lead behind three straight goals by Cullinan, Varga and O'Neill over a six-minute stretch.
The Hens answered back with three goals of their own to take the lead at 4-3 with 9:36 left in the second quarter. Cullinan hooked up with Varga again to knot it up at 4-4 before Martin put Delaware up once again 5-4. O'Neill tied the game up with 4:00 to go in the first half to make it 5-5, the last time the Hens wouldn't lead the game.
After two even-strength Delaware goals, Varga connected again to cut the deficit to 7-6 off a Cullinan assist. Delaware ran three goals off again before SJU fought back behind another Varga goal and a Peter Slowik goal to make it 10-8 Delaware with 3:55 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
From there, the Hens dominated, scoring six straight before Cullinan and Varga stopped the bleeding in the middle of the fourth quarter. Giordano added his fourth and fifth goals for the final score, 18-10.
For the game, the Hens were the aggressor, out-shooting the Hawks, 37-24 and picking up nine more penalties, 12-3. SJU wasn't able to capitalize on many of their man-up opportunities, converting 3-10 while Delaware scored on one of their three man-up opportunities.
Erik Hotaling stopped six shots for the Hawks, while Delaware's Tom Sherr notched 10 saves.
